This easy tour begins at the base of Mount
Kilimanjaro, and travels through the Pare and Usambara mountains,
to the Tanzanian coast. It is possible to extend this tour
by visiting the magical spice island of Zanzibar.
Route profile:
the route is relatively easy for off road biking; roads vary
from gravel, sand tracks and some small sections of tar. 95%
of the trip is off-road and is approximately 1350km long.
Day 1
On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) you
will be met by your guide and are transferred to Hatari
Lodge. This lodge is set on Ngongongare Farm which
was owned for 12 years by Hardy Krüger and served as
the setting for the 1962 film Hatari!, in which Krüger
appeared with John Wayne.
The lodge sits perfectly between Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro.
The day is spent at your leisure around the lodge and you
can view the resident giraffe and zebra populations.
Day 2
The first morning of your Tanzanian adventure is spent with
an armed ranger walking in the forests of Mount Meru. The
mountain forest is full of game and your guide will show you
large herds of buffalo and giraffe from a safe distance. In
the afternoon you are given a briefing on the route and the
bikes themselves. Overnight accommodation is again at Hatari
lodge.
Day 3
Today we have a short ride, getting used to the bikes, heading
across the savanna to Sinya at the foot of Kilimanjaro. On
the way we will see giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and with luck
elephant. Overnight accommodation is at Kambi Ya Tembo at the foot of Kilimanjaro. (90km, 3-4 hours)
Day 4
Today we travel around Mount Kilimanjaro on a variety of good
crushed stone roads. We pass through several small villages
and if the weather is good there are fantastic views of Mawenzi
and Kibo; the two peaks of Kilimanjaro. In the afternoon we
arrive at the Marangu Hotel (170 km, 5 hours)
Day 5
Today we travel through the northern Pare mountains. We travel
up adventure filled mountain paths in the direction of Lake
Jipu and the Kenyan border.
After lunch on the bank of the lake we have a short trip to
see hippos. The afternoon is spent travelling through the
Pare mountains where we reach Mkomazi Game Reserve, here we
leave the bikes and are collected by Landcruiser and are taken
to Babu’s Camp where we overnight.

Day 6
We spend the day in Mkomazi, Tanzania’s newest protected
area. In the morning we have a safari with a chance to see
antelope, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and the rare African painted
dog (wild dog).Mkomazi is a bird lovers paradise with over
450 species many of which are endemic to the area.
After lunch back in the lodge the afternoon is spent visiting
the rhino project, which is trying to reintroduce these great
animals to their former habitat. Overnight accommodation is
again at Babu’s Camp.
Day 7
After breakfast we travel through the eastern slopes of the
Pare Mountains. The path travels through untouched savannah
up to Lake Kalimawe, which is surrounded by rice plantations,
small villages and palm forests. After a lunch break we climb
the zigzag road up the Usambara mountains to Mlalo at over
2.300m, which offers unique views over the region.
In the afternoon we reach Lushoto, the former German colonial
town. We have lunch on the Irente farm with German grey bread
and coffee harvested on the farm. Afterwards we have an excursion
to the Irente Viewpoint, where the Usambara mountains drop
over 1000 m to the the Massai steppe below. In the late afternoon
we reach our accommodation, the Maweni Farm Lodge (or Irente View Point). (310km, 8 hours)
Day 8
Today we continue towards the Indian ocean coastline today
passing through the southern Usambara mountains. The well
maintained mountain track offers spectacular views over the
surrounding countryside. In the evening we reach the coast
of Tanzania at Pangani, where we stay in the Tides
Lodge. (255 km, 6 hours)
Day 9
We follow the picturesque coast road winding through coconut
plantations to Saadani national park. On arrival we have the
afternoon free for relaxing on the Indian Ocean beach. Accommodation
is at the breath-taking Tent With A View Lodge.
(65 km, 2 hours)
Day 10
Visit of Saadani National Park and boat safari on the Wami
River. Here we see hippos and crocodiles sunning themselves
on the river banks. After the safari we continue by boat or
motorbikes to Bagamoyo, the former colonial capital of German
East Africa. Accommodation is in the Livingstone Club.
Day 11
In the morning we have a guided tour highlighting the history
of Bagamoyo. In the afternoon we travel to Dar es Salaam,
Tanzania’s largest city for your return flight home
or your connection to Zanzibar.

The ferryboat will take us to Zanzibar. Transfer to the Breezes
Beach Hotel on the east cost of Zanzibar.

Bathing, scuba-diving at the offshore reef or just relaxing

Transfer to the airport – flight back to your homecountry.
