Crossing the great south of Tanzania on a bike

This tour will bring you to the great south of Tanzania, to the unknown and not often visited Selous and Mikumi National Park. Also you will drive through the wonderful Udzungwa and Uluguru mountains with it's up to 2600 meter high peaks.

Route profile: the route is moderately severe for biking; roads vary from gravel, sand tracks and some small sections of tar. 70% of the trip is off-road and it is approximately 2550KM long.

Day 1
On arrival at at Dar es Salaam you will be met by your guide and are transferred to Kipepeo Lodge at the coastline of the Indian Ocean.

Day 2
The second day starts with a briefing on the route and the bikes themselves. We then have a short ride, getting used to the bikes. In the afternoon a short but very nice trip to Ras Kimbiji. 2. overnight at Kipepeo Lodge.

Day 3
Tour starts at tarmac, 100km after leaving the hotel we will leave the tarmac road and drive on gravel and sandy roads towards Rufiji River, and Rufiji River Camp. On this part of the tours we get a first look of the african wilderness, often you see zebras, giraffs and antilopes.

Day 4
Safari day in the Selous national park. Today is Safari day. Today we start with a break from the bikes and spend the day game viewing in the heart of the park. The Selous NP in one of the largest national parks in the world and is famous for the big heards of elephants. Overnight at the Sable Mountain Lodge.

Day 5
After an early morning start; we travel along the Uluguru Mountains, cossing them later on. We travel up adventure filled mountain paths, the peaks, which are are covered with huge trees and bushes, are up to 2700 meters high. These mountains are one of the most important mountain ranges to protect the endangered species of wild fauna and flora in africa. Overnight in the Vuma Hill Lodge on the border of the Mikumi national park.

Day 6
After an early morning start; we cross the Mikumi national park with the bikes. With a little luck we can see herds of elephants, maybe giraffes and of course zebras and antelopes. We pass Mpwapwa and drive through the slopes of some beautiful mountains. In the afternoon we reach Dodoma. Overnight in the Dodoma Hotel.

Day 7
After breakfast we travel along dusty tracks through the hills to Kolo. Kolo is famous for its ancient rock paintings in the caves near the town. The UNESCO declared those paintings as a 'World Heritage Site'. Leaving Kolo to the north heading to Dodoma. Overnight and a fresh shower at the Babati Lake Lodge, a small but very nice lodge at the shore of the Lake Babati.

Day 8
After a hot cup of coffee in the morning we heading toward Mt. Hanang. With 3417 m this mountain is one of the highest mountain in this part of Tanzania. With some luck (and is does not rain) we can drive on the dry parts of the wide salt lake on foot of Mt. Hanang. On dusty tracks we reach the plains south of Tarangire, from there our route takes us past Tarangire National Park and there is a good chance of us seeing a variety of antelope, giraffe & zebra. If we are lucky we may even see elephants. We spent the night in the dream-like Kikoti Camp next to the border of the Tarangire NP..

Day 9
After breakfast we drive through the endless Masai plains, with untouched villages. We travel further across the impressive plains. These wide open spaces and dirt tracks are perfect for off-road biking. In the afternoon, we reach the Lossogonoi Mountain range, where the support crew will have already set up a cosy camp where we will spend the night.

Day 10
We travel further north past the Nyumba Ya Mungu lake and various plantations to Moshi, the city at the foot of the legendary Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa with its snow-covered summit. Overnight accommodation is at the Marangu hotel at the foot of the Kilimanjaro.

Day 11
Today we travel around Mount Kilimanjaro on a variety of good gravel roads. We pass through several small villages and if the weather is good there are fantastic views of Mawenzi and Kibo; the two peaks of Kilimanjaro. There is also a possibility to see some game on this the last section of our trip. In the evening we arrive at Hatari Lodge where we overnight, completing our round trip.

Day 12
The final day of your Tanzanian adventure is spent with an armed ranger walking in the forests of Mount Meru. The mountain forest is full of game and your guide will show you large herds of buffalo and giraffe from a safe distance. In the afternoon you are transferred to the airport for your flight home or a possible extension to the magical spice island of Zanzibar.

Extension days Zanzibar

Day 11
The ferryboat will take us to Zanzibar. Transfer to the Breezes Beach Hotel on the east cost of Zanzibar.

Day 12 + 13
Bathing, scuba-diving at the offshore reef or just relaxing in the sun. Breakfast and dinner.

Day 14
Transfer to the airport – flight back to your homecountry.
